A catalytic slurry hydrorefining process of a hydrocarbonaceous charge stock containing hydrocarbon-insoluble asphaltenes is effected by dissolving in the charge stock an oxyvanadate salt having the following structural formula: [N(R)4]3V0(X)5 wherein "X" is a cyano, or thiocyano radical, and "R" is hydrogen, or an alkyl group containing up to 10 carbon atoms. The slurry is formed in situ at hydrorefining conditions with hydrogen containing hydrogen sulfide resulting in colloidally dispersed vanadium sulfide.
