Apparatus for testing tubular or hollow articles 9 designed to withstand internal pressure comprises means for introducing fluid under pressure into an article to be tested, means 18 for indicating the pressure of the fluid within the article, means for indicating when the article fails, and a cut-off valve 24 for automatically cutting-off the pressurized supply to the article when the article fails, the cut-off valve comprising a valve member 27 located within a chamber 26 adapted to be placed in flow communication with the said pressurized supply and with the interior of the article being tested, the chamber having a seating 29 against which the valve member 27 is adapted to bear to cut-off the supply of pressurized fluid to the article being tested, the loading on the valve member at which the pressurized flow is cut-off being adjusted by the screw-member 32. In the embodiment described, the apparatus is used to test six thermoplastic pipes 9, which are mounted in a water bath 14, pressurized water being pumped into the pipes through a sensitive pressure regulator 17, cut-off valves 29 returning to the water bath via venting valves 20. When the pressure in the specimen reaches a certain value the timing unit 21 is started and stops when the pressure drops. If a specimen fails, the cut-off valve 24 operates to cut-off the pressure and the reading of the timing unit is taken. |
