1283268 Time-cost computing APT CONTROLS Ltd and R G STONE 23 June 1971 [29 June 1970] 31295/70 Heading G4T In a system for computing the fee for using a facility (e.g. a car park) between first and second times, wherein (a) a succession of electrical pulses are generated and counted, (b) a ticket issued at the first time carries an indication of the count at that time, (c) this indication is read at the second time and a number of pulses (proportional to the fee) are added to the reading until the adjusted reading is equal to the counted succession of pulses at the second time, and (d) the fee is displayed, a programmer under the control of a time switch changes the frequency of the generated pulses, e.g. to increase the charges for car parking during certain times of the day. The pulses generated at 10, 11 and controlled at 12 by the programmer 14 and a time switch 15 are uninterruptedly fed to a master counter 13 and slave counters 13a-13d. Entry of a car into the car park is sensed at 18 to initiate the issue of a ticket 17 bearing an indication of the count from slave counter 13a at the time of entry. To leave the car park, the recorded count is read from the ticket at 20 and entered into counter 21. This entered count is increased by pulses fed from 22 until comparator 23 senses parity between the value stored in 21 and the count registered in slave counter 13b at the time of leaving. Comparator 23 then closes a gate 25 to stop the feeding of pulses from 22 to a bi-directional counter 26, the latter then storing a number proportional to the fee payable. The overall cost of parking can be adjusted at 24. The fee is displayed at 27. The user inserts coins at 29 until the number stored in counter 26 and the amount displayed at 27 are reduced to zero, whereupon a ticket bearing the count at this time is issued at 31. Provided that this ticket is presented at 32 within a given time from its time of issue, barrier 35 opens. If this given period of time is exceeded a display 36 is actuated to indicate that a further fee is payable.
