1388627 Gas-generating compositions SUSQUEHANNA 4 May 1972 [7 May 1971] 20812/72 Heading C1D [Also in Division F4] A gas-generating composition for use in inflating an automobile crash bag, an escape slide shoot, or a life raft comprises (a) plasticized polyvinyl chloride binder; (b) ammonium perchlorate, an alkali metal chlorate or perchlorate, or an alkaline earth metal nitrate; and (c) a halogen-free alkali metal salt, e.g. sodium or potassium nitrates, nitrites, carbonates or oxalates, sodium bicarbonate, or potassium azide; the amount of component (b) is sufficient to oxidize all available carbon to CO 2 and all available hydrogen to H 2 O, and the amount of component (c) is at least sufficient to convert all available halogen to alkali metal halide and is up to 10 mol per cent in excess of this amount. Polyvinyl chloride may be replaced by a vinyl chloride copolymer with vinyl acetate or vinylidene chloride. Several suitable organic liquid plasticizers are specified. The composition may also include a stabilizer, a burning rate catalyst, and a coolant. In examples the following ingredients are used in addition to polyvinyl chloride: dioctyl adipate, dibutyl sebacate, NaNO 3 , KNO 3 , KClO 4 , NH 4 ClO 4 , Sr(NO 3 ) 2 , carbon black, and Fe 2 O 3 . A barium-cadmium or tin-sulphur organic compound may be added as a stabilizer. An inflation system including the gas-generating grain arranged within a pressure vessel is described with reference to a drawing. |
