Waste water is treated continuously by first decanting off from sludge, then charging it with oxygen. The liq. with oxygen dissolved in it is then aerobically treated to cause degradation of the substances in it, further aerobically treated to convert nitrogenous material into nitrates, and then, after de-gassing, treated anaerobically to decompose the nitrates, free nitrogen being filtered. The flow is regulated by analysis of the purified water, partic. w.r.t. its chemical oxygen demand. The process can be conducted under press. The biological degradation and other treatments are conducted using specific bacteria for the various stages. The bacteria used can also be adapted to other components of the treated water, e.g. S and sulphites. The process overcomes lack of response to variations in flow rate, incapability of treating feebly charged effluents, and lack of elimination of nitrogenous cpds., these difficulties being caused by the low oxygen transfer capacity of previous systems. Installations used to effect this process are very flexible in operation.
|
