Barrel cooling jacket for automatic weapon - uses sodium filled chamber under or on each side, extending for full length of barrel

The method of cooling the barrel of a weapon such as a machine gun, uses a housing (2) which partly extends round the barrel (1), and extends along its entire length. This forms a chamber (3) which is filled with sodium. The chamber can extend in a semicircle around the lower half of the barrel. In an alternative design, two separate chambers are used, one each side of the barrel. The position of the chambers for both designs ensures that the sight (5) is not interrupted.
