<p>Ferro-B is obtained by heating a mixture of a B material selected from B oxide, boric acid, borex, colemanite, priceite, meyerhofferite and mixtures of these; Fe and/or Fe oxides; a C reducer selected from C black, activated C, coke and mixtures of these; and a carbohydrate selected from sugars, starches, cellulose and mixture of these, to form a char containing B oxide, partly reducing the char in a first zone of an electric arc or plasma furnace. The product is further heated in a second zone to form molten ferro-B, condensing vapours in cooler zones to retain any B values.</p> |
