11 Fuel additives in vehicle fuel samples are quantitatively determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The vehicle fuel necessarily includes a detergent additive which is usually one component of a multi-component additive package (e.g., which also contains a carrier and a solvent for the detergent). Samples of the detergent additive-containing vehicle fuel are thus subjected to gel permeation chromatography by injection of the fuel sample into a mobile phase of the GPC system in this regard, the mobile phase of the GPC system will have a viscosity which is substantially the same as the viscosity of the fuel sample so that the fuel sample may be injected directly (i.e., without first being diluted). A chromatogram is thus obtained having identifiable (and hence quantifiable) bands indicative of the detergent additive component.
