Process for cleaning mesoporous tubular ultrafiltration membranes fitted as a bundle in a housing, with bounding of a concentrate compartment where the retained substances accumulate both in suspension and on the membranes, and of a permeate compartment collecting the filtered liquid, characterised in that it includes the stages consisting in a) emptying the concentrate compartment to remove the liquid to be filtered which it contains and the suspended matter, and then b) carrying out back-washing by passing liquid from the permeate compartment towards the concentrate compartment through the membranes to detach and remove the impurities deposited on the latter. The process applies to all types of mesoporous ultrafiltration membranes with tubular geometry including hollow fibres (symmetrical, asymmetrical, inner-skinned or outer-skinned).
