A hand-held radio frequency transmitter (10) for use in generating a coded radio frequency transmission has a switched mode power supply (12) energizable by a battery (52). A radio frequency oscillator (14) is driven by the switched mode supply. A modulator (146) controls operation of the oscillator which produces a coded radio frequency signal.
