PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an optically active alcohol by using an asymmetric reduction reactant comprising an optically active amide as an asymmetry source which is inexpensive and readily obtainable and asymmetrically reducing a wide range of carbonyl compound group from an aliphatic carbonyl compound represented by a β-ketoester to an aromatic ketone. SOLUTION: This method for producing an optically active alcohol comprises using an optically active quadridentate ruthenium complex composed of an optically active compound containing two phosphines and two amide bonds in the same molecule and ruthenium and asymmetrically reducing a carbonyl compound.
