The connector consists of a rigid body (2), e.g. of a molded synthetic material, with a tubular insert (3) for each pipe (5) with first and second peripheral grooves (9, 13) for a seal (10) and a split ring (16) with sharp-edged external gripping elements (20). The grip ring and second groove have matching inclined thrust surfaces (15, 19). The body has a stop collar (24) for the pipe end and the outer sleeve has a window (27) for checking the position of the pipe end and an in-turned edge (26) to engage with the collar. In a variant the tubular inserts can be of metal and the stop collars of synthetic material.
