PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical module that deals with a surface receiving/emitting type optical element suitable for high density mounting and that simplifies an aligning process. SOLUTION: The optical module mounted with a surface receiving/emitting optical element is equipped with a holding base having a difference-in-level part, a block member that inserts a light transmitting medium to be placed on a higher side of the holding base, between the block and the holding base, and a surface emitting optical element that is placed on a lower side of the holding base, in a state capable of light receiving/emitting with respect to a vertical direction, in a position corresponding to the end face of the light transmitting medium placed on the higher side of the holding base.
