PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an igniter for an internal combustion engine capable of outputting to the outside of the igniter the information that a self shut-off function is activated, in particular, transmitting to an ECU the information without increasing the number of terminals of the igniter itself and the number of connection wires to the ECU and the igniter. SOLUTION: When a switching element 8 maintains an abnormal current time owing to an input of an ignition signal of a predetermined time and more from an ECU1 or an external factor, etc., or when abnormal heat is generated owing to the abnormal electrical current, a self-shutoff circuit 12 detects one of them, controls a base or gate voltage of the switching element, so as to perform a self-shutoff of the primary current. When the self-shutoff function is activated, an ignition signal controller 15 changes the ignition signal on the ignition signal line at the igniter side and gives information to the ECU 1 side through the ignition signal line.
