PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To alleviate the change of combustion noise when the number of times of pilot injection is changed accompanied by the change of an operation state in relation to a control device for an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: When the operation state is transferred from a low speed side multiple pilot region in which a plurality of times of pilot injection are performed to a high speed side single pilot region in which only one pilot injection is performed, an injection pattern is changed over. At the changeover, an internal EGR ratio is temporally increased. Consequently, since ignition timing is advanced, the increase of combustion noise caused by changeover from multiple pilot injection to single pilot injection can be inhibited. A swirl ratio is also increased simultaneously. Consequently, the increase of smoke accompanied by the increase of the internal EGR ratio can be inhibited. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
