PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk device capable of shortening time necessary for starting by setting the moving distance of an optical head as short as possible when information is read from an optical disk at starting, and increasing a speed of starting, and to provide its control method. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a means 37 for detecting occurrence of a failure in a part of the information recording area of an optical disk 11 and replacing the failed part by a part of an alternative area, and a second means 37 for moving, on the basis of a prescribed start timing, information recorded in the specific predetermined area of the optical disk 11 to a part of the alternative area even when the occurrence of a failure in the specific area is not detected.
