A method for updating a transmission schedule of different types of packets on a channel based on an estimated congestion level, comprises:
assigning an initial back off counter to packets on said channel;
estimating a congestion level for each urgency class of packets based upon at least one reservation message, wherein said at least one reservation message comprises a feedback on a success or a failure of a transmission attempt, a number of re-transmission attempts by a node, a number of re-transmission attempts by each neighbor of said node, an age of said re-transmission attempts by said node and by said each neighbor of said node and a number of transmission attempts.
