A fuel cartridge comprises a canned fuel element surrounded by and spaced from a sleeve and resting on a support, the support being received by and spaced from the sleeve and resting on a plurality of members each releasably engaging in a recess in the support and in a recess in the sleeve, such that the weight of the fuel element and its support maintains the members in engagement with their recesses to hold the element against the action of gravity within the sleeve. Each member may comprise a disc which engages in a vertical slot machined in the support, and in a groove in the sleeve, the plane of each disc including the axis of the sleeve. Each disc may have a slightly bulged central portion. Alternatively, each member is spherical and engages in a vertical groove in the support and in a groove in the sleeve. The sleeve, support and members are preferably formed of graphite. |
