1,036,958. Linear travelling wave particle accelerators. CSF.-COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. Oct. 1, 1964 [Oct. 8, 1963], No. 39948/64. Heading H1D. A delay line structure for a linear travelling wave particle accelerator comprises a series of elements spaced apart along the beam path having an aperture symmetrical with respect to two orthogonal axes, the centre of the apertures being aligned along the axis of the accelerator to allow passage of the accelerated beam, wherein the shape of each of the apertures is elongated along one of the orthogonal axes, and the spatial position of successive apertures is shifted by a predetermined fixed angle from one to the next of the elements. The shapes of the apertures may be rectangular, elliptical, oval, or defined by two parallel lines joined by arcs of circles or by arcs of hyperbolas joined by arcs of circles (i.e. dumb-bell shaped). The shifting angle between adjacent apertures is equal to #/n, where n is any integer higher than unity. The elements may be diaphragms, plates, fingers or bars, and the invention can be applied to the delay line described in Specification 986,301. The beam is focused by the radio frequency field. |
