A biomarker for detecting a novel volatile organic compound is provided to use for virtual harmfulness evaluation depending on statistics. A method for detecting a volatile organic compound comprises: a step of treating a sample which is suspected to have the volatile organic compound in a cell line; a step of detecting expression profile of biomarker gene; and a step of determining a sample having difference in expression comparing with expression profile of cell line.
