Photographic silver halide layers are processed in the absence of H 2 O by means of a processing agent in the layer or an adjacent layer, which may be on another support, by heating in the presence of a solid non-aqueous compound which melts and acts as a solvent for the processing agent, said compound being present in the same or an adjacent layer. The processing agent may be a reducing, developing, fixing or stabilizing agent, many of which are listed. The non-aqueous solvent may have a m.p. below 140‹ C. and may be a single compound or a eutectic mixture. The solvent is preferably a crystallizable, monomeric, high dielectric polar solid having the group -SO 2 - or -CO- e.g. XCO.NRR', YSO 2 , NH 2 , ZCO. NRR", wherein X is H, alkyl, R'NH, R"O or (CH 2 )1-4 CO. NRR'; R is H, CH 3 or HOCH 2 CH 2 -; R' is H or CH 3 , R" is alkyl; X and R' or Z and R"' may together be -(CH 2 ) 2-3 CO- or -(CH 2 ) 3-5 -; R and R' may complete a heterocyclic ring; Y is alkyl, -NH 2 , R"O-, aryl or substituted aryl; and W represents the members for completing a heterocyclic ring. When the silver halide, developer and solvent are contained in one or more layers on one or two supports, a permeable barrier layer may be included between the layers. The solvent is preferably coated in admixture with a conventional binder. The invention may be applied to conventional positive or negative materials (Examples 7 and 14-25), the silver salt diffusion process (Example 1-5 and 10-13), the colloid diffusion process (Examples 8 and 9). Example 19 refers to a layer containing AgC1 and silver citrate. The light-sensitive layers may contain the usual addenda and colour couplers may be included in any layer. |
