In a tunnel-boring machine a rotatable cutter and its drive can be advanced along the axis of a self-advancing shield, the diameter of which shield can .be increased or decreased at will by insertion of or removal of segmental sections from the peripheral ring structure of the shield. Ram means are provided between the cutter-drive assembly and the shield for both advancing the assembly along the axis of the shield and for positioning the assembly relative to said axis so that the angle of the axis of rotation of the cutter to said shield axis may be varied as desired. |
