A billet 14, particularly of metal, is extruded through an extrusion orifice 16 of non-circular cross-section in the side wall of the extrusion chamber 12. The billet is of the same general cross-section as the extrusion orifice and may be heated and lubricated with powdered glass, molybdenum disulphide or colloidal graphite 24 before insertion into the chamber 12 where equal and opposite forces 20, 22 are applied. A separate nose-piece (27), Fig. 2 (not shown), on the wall of the chamber opposite the extrusion orifice assists extrusion therethrough. The nosepiece may extend into the orifice, Fig. 3 (not shown), to form an extruded tube. The chamber may have a plurality of extrusion orifices, Fig. 4 (not shown). The invention is of particular use in the extrusion of gas turbine blades from cast billets of trapezoidal cross-section, Fig. 5 (not shown), using a two-part extrusion chamber (10a) (10b). The blades (30) may be further worked by forging, machining and grinding. The extrusion may be performed hot or cold. |
