Battery charging apparatus for a portable appliance 11 such as an electrically operated toothbrush comprises a stand 12 containing one C-shaped half, 17, of the magnetic core of a transformer on which is wound the primary winding 18, the other C-shaped half, 16, of the core being housed in the appliance 11 and containing the secondary winding 26, the arrangement being such that when the appliance 11 is placed on the stand 12 the transformer functions to charge the battery 27 which powers the appliance. Rectification is provided by a diode 27 and a Zener diode 31 provides a substantially constant charging voltage. An indicating lamp 24 is also provided. |
