1,246,699. Friction clutches. RAYBESTOS MANHATTAN Inc. 7 Feb., 1969 [8 Feb., 1968], No. 6637/69. Heading F2C. A friction clutch facing for a motor vehicle comprises a spirally wound strip 11 of fibrous fabric reinforced with fine metal wires 22, e.g. of brass, copper, zinc, or lead, and a plurality of spaced yarns of continuous glass filaments 23 extending substantially longitudinally of the fabric strip, the assemblies of glass filaments having been sized and impregnated with a vulcanizable elastomer, said strip being impregnated with a heat-curable cement composition comprising a thermosetting resin and a vulcanizable elastomer, the facing being compressed to consolidate the convolutions and heat treated to cure the cement. The fabric may be woven of yarn of asbestos fibre or mixtures of asbestos fibre with other textile fibres, e.g. cotton, wool, rayon, linen or jute, reinforced by metal wires (17), Fig. 4 (not shown), and glass filaments (18). Alternately, Fig. 5 (not shown), a yarn of glass filaments 23 may be woven into the fabric with the wire reinforced asbestos warp yarns. In Fig. 6 (not shown), a non-woven fabric comprises glass filaments (27) lying between reinforced asbestos yarns (25) and cemented together. The Specification gives examples of resins and friction fillers for the cement, sizes or anchoring agents applied to the glass filaments, and vulcanizable elastomers with which the glass filaments and strip are impregnated. |
