The invention comprises interaction products of a water-insoluble, hydrophilic, cationic inorganic oxide and a fluoroaliphatic mono-carboxylic acid having 4-22 carbon atoms in which 70-100% of the non-carbon-to-carbon bonds are satisfied by fluorine and the terminal carbon atom carries 2 or 3 fluorine atoms. The chemical or physical nature of the product is not known. The interaction product can be obtained by bringing the components into contact at room temperature, but it is preferred to heat the components in the presence of a diluent. Specified oxides are alumina, titania, zirconia. silica, zinc oxide and mixtures of oxides such as bentonites and clays. The invention is illustrated by reference to products derived from alumina and pentadecafluorooctanoic acid, and perfluorobutyric acid.ALSO:The invention comprises a product obtained by the interaction of a water-insoluble, hydrophilic, cationic, inorganic oxide and a fluorinated carboxylic acid of the formula X(CR2)nCOOH where X is -CF3 or -CHF2, n is 2-20, R is hydrogen or fluorine, at least 70% of the hydrogen and fluorine atoms in X(CR2)n being fluorine. The nature of the interaction is not known, but it may be a physical phenomenon akin to adsorption. The invention is illustrated with reference to products obtained from alumina and pentadeca fluorooctanoic acid; alumina containing 5.6 by weight of the acid was obtained by heating 50 part wt. of oxide with 4 part wt. of acid in isopropanol (solvent for acid); the resulting alumina is oil-and water-repellent.ALSO:Paper, leather or textile material is treated with the reaction product of alumina and pentadecafluorooctanoic acid as a suspension in water or isopropanol. The material may be padded to 70% wet pick-up and cured at a temperature of up to 350 DEG F. |
