[Also in Division G2] A laser beam is focused to a spot having a controllable size, by means of an optical system having a continuously variable focal length providing a ratio between extreme focal lengths of at least 1 to 5. The beam may be used for welding, drilling, cutting or machining materials, or for micro-surgery. The output from laser 18 is directed through a sighting device, when mirrors 24, 26 are retracted, and passes through optical system 20 which focuses it on to workpiece 16. The system can be adjusted, when the laser is switched off, by arranging mirrors 24, 26 as shown. Partially transparent mirror 26 reflects light from source 30 on to the workpiece which can then be inspected through viewing device 36, 38, 40, 42. Source 30, preferably produces radiation having the same wavelength as the laser beam. The optical system 20 preferably comprises a fixed convergent lens, a movable divergent lens and a movable convergent lens. The ratio of the enlargement produced by each movable lens in its extreme positions is preferably between 2 and 3 to 1, giving an overall ratio of enlargements of about 6 to 1. A further fixed convergent lens may be provided at the output end of the system. The lenses should be made of a glass resistant to the effects of laser radiation and are preferably uncemented elements separated by air gaps. The working distance of the system may be fixed regardless of the positions of the movable lenses.
