Apparatus for traction of the spine comprises a pelvic girdle 1, a tractor structure 2 carrying a structure 10 for supporting a patient's head, and inflatable cushions 13, 14 arranged on plates 11, 12 of structure 10 connected by pipes 15, 16 to pump 17. In use, girdle 1 is fitted around the patient's pelvis, the tractor structure 2 is then arranged on the patient, adjustment screw 6 is turned to give a preliminary traction followed by inflation of the cushions 13, 14 by means of pump 17 to effect a further steady traction of the spine. In modifications, a pneumatic cylinder may be fitted to the girdle or plates 11, 12 so as to urge the tractor structure 2 upwards, instead of using inflatable cushions 13, 14. The head supporting structure 10 may be adjustable about the horizontal and vertical axes. For effecting the correction of certain deformities, a plate 20 fitted with an inflatable cushion 21 may be secured to the tractor structure 2. |
