Saturated or unsaturated polycarbonyl compounds having a molecular weight above 5000 and consisting of a substantially saturated main hydrocarbon chain with side chains containing carbonyl groups are made by oxidizing a copolymer of one or more a -olefins and a non-conjugated straight or branched chain or cyclic diene (or higher polyene) so that carbonyl groups are formed at the residual unsaturations on the chain and very little chain scission takes place. The oxidizing agent specified is ozone optionally followed by hydrogen peroxide. Copolymers exemplified are ethylene (diallyl, ethylene/propylene)cyclo-octadiene-1,5, diallyl, dicyclopentadiene, 2-methyl-pentadiene-1,4 and 1,2,4-trivinylcyclohexane terpolymers. The products are vulcanized by means of zinc oxide. |
