[Also in Division C3] Aqueous coating compositions suitable for providing temporary coatings which can be removed by treatment with an alkaline agent comprise (A) an organic film former comprising (i) an emulsion polymer consisting of (a) 5-35% by weight of acrylic or methacrylic acid (b) 65-95% by weight of at least 2 monomers selected from acrylate and methacrylate esters of C 1 -C 10 alcohols, and vinyl substituted aromatic or alkaromatic hydrocarbons (ii) a resin cut containing (a) an aqueous base and (b) an alkali soluble resin of the condensation type or of the addition type containing units selected from (meth)acrylic acid and vinyl aromatic or vinyl alkaromatic hydrocarbons; (b) aqueous ammonia; (c) a complex or formula M(NH 3 ) n Y 2 where M is Zn, Cd, Cu and/or Ni, n is the co-ordination number of M ranging from 4-6 and y represents a carboxylcontaining anion or a resinous or polymeric anion; and (d) a stabilising agent, e.g. aqueous ammonia and/or an ethylene oxide condensate. The alkali soluble resin may be the condensation product of a polyol with a rosin/maleic anhydride adduct or a styrene-acrylic acid copolymer. Optional components include plastioisers, polyethylene wax, natural wax, fatty acid soaps, glycols, glycol ethers, casein, poly sodium carboxylate dispersant, titanium dioxide, diphenyl mercury dodecenyl saccinate, antifoam agent and phthalocyanine blue. The compositions are particularly suitable for providing floor coatings, and may be applied to metals, glass, wood, linoleum, vinyl asbestos, asphalt and vinyl tile, e.g. with a rag, mop, brush, or by spraying or dipping. |
