A composite pattern for sand moulding has some parts 1, 3a and 4a made of a rigid material e.g. wood, and some parts 3b, 4b of an expanded synthetic material, e.g. foamed polystyrene, which is in contact with but not secured to the rigid material. The pattern may be in the form of a box having a lining of polystyrene therein, the lining being extracted from the box on removal of the core 5 therefrom. The box may be provided with a plurality of compartments for a plurality of cores, the common wall separating two such compartments having a lining of polystyrene on one side only. The box may be held together by angle irons 6 which are secured to the walls by screws removable from inside the box, so that after extraction of the core 5, the pattern may be dismantled to enable it to be removed from the surrounding mould. |
