A luminaire, particularly for mounting on a vertical wall to illuminate the area adjacent the wall, comprises a light source LC, a glass refractor 10 and a metallic reflector 12, the upper section of the outside surface of the front face 20 of the refractor being formed with a series of concentric arcuate prisms 20a (Fig. 1) adapted to concentrate the emergent beam at an angle of about 70 degrees to the downward vertical whilst at the same time spreading it laterally. The depths of the prisms decrease progressively from the central section A to the outer sections C, and the lower section J of the face is formed with arcuate flutes concentric with the prisms which diffuse the light without changing the beam angle. The outside surfaces of the end panels 22 of the refractor are formed with prisms 24 (Fig. 4) which are horizontal at the top of the panel and curve at 24a to become vertical at 24b, and the remaining portions of the surfaces are provided with horizontal flutes 30. The inside surfaces of the front and side panels are formed with vertical prisms and flutes respectively. The bottom panel 29 is provided with prisms 36 (Fig. 7) on its inside surface, whilst the outside surface has straight laterally extending prisms at the rear and straight laterally extending flutes at the front. The reflector 12 comprises, in vertical section, a lower parabolic part 14 and an upper part 16 (Fig. 3), and the horizontal section (Fig. 2) includes two symmetrical arcuate parts 18, 18a. In a modification (Figs. 11 and 12, not shown) having an elongated light source such as a mercury lamp, the reflector is arcuate in vertical section and the horizontal section consists of a plurality of circular arcs. |
