Combustible components contained in waste automobile gases are treated with a catalyst comprising a refractory inorganic oxide support, a Gp IB, VB, VIB or VIII metal component and barium, magnesium or strontium chromate. Metallic components exemplified are platinum, palladium iridium ruthenium rhodium iron cobalt nickel copper vanadium tungsten molybdenum silver and gold and various specified mixtures of these elements viz platinum with iron, cobalt, nickel or palladium, palladium with iron cobalt or nickel and palladium-copper-cobalt, copper-cobalt-nickel-platinum and platinum-palladium-cobalt. Refractory oxides comprise alumina silica, boria, thoria, titania, zirconia, haffnia and mixtures thereof and may be of a desired shape. The support carrier may be impregnated with the metallic component using citric, oxalic, malonic, succinic glutaric adapic pirnelic, suberic, malic, tartaric 2 methyl succinic 2, 3 diethyl-succinic and 2-2 dimethyl succinic acids and mixtures thereof. |
