A method of sawing comprises sawing at a pair of opposite sides of a workpiece to produce two mutually independent oo-planar cuts, turning the workpiece through 90 degrees about its longitudinal axis, and sawing to produce two further mutually independent cuts each coplanar with the first cuts. Steel slabs which are to be cut to length for feeding to an extrusion press for making seamless steel tube are fed by a roll train 5 to two pairs of saws 6 which effect the first coplanar cuts on opposite sides of the slabs. The cut slabs are transported by the roll train 5 to a device for tilting the slabs through 90 degrees on to a transverse roll train 7 which conveys the slabs to a roll train 8 for feeding to two pairs of saws 9 for effecting the second cuts coplanar with the first. The remaining material between the cuts may be broken or cut by one or more saws, the cut slabs pass to an unloading position 10. |
