The distance between two ferromagnetic rolls 1, 4 Fig. 2 is determined by producing a magnetic flux 11 in the space between the rolls, whose intensity is measured by magnetic resistive semiconductor elements 10<SP>1</SP>, 10<SP>11</SP> , and is indicative of the length of the space. The flux 11 is produced by an energized winding 9 on a core assembly 8 in contact with the rolls 1, 4 via poles 8<SP>1</SP> , 8<SP>11</SP>. The resistance of the elements 10<SP>1</SP> , 10<SP>11</SP> is compared in a bridge circuit 13 with that of two similar elements 12<SP>1</SP>, 12<SP>11</SP> located in the field produced by a winding 16 whose energizing current via is adjusted to balance the bridge. The probes 10<SP>1</SP> , 10<SP>11</SP> are located symmetrically with respect to the axial plane of the rolls 1, 4 so that small lateral displacements produce differential effects on their resistances and are thus automatically compensated. The probes 10<SP>1</SP>, 10<SP>11</SP> are mounted on a carrier 17 Fig. 5 with spring fork arms embracing the two rolls to make the carrier and the probes follow lateral displacements of the rolls relative to each other. The carrier 17 may incorporate a temperature sensitive resistor to compare the temperature with that of the other magnetic core 15. In another embodiment Fig. 9, the thickness of a non-magnetic wire or tape P is measured by its effect on the flux density in the gap between poles 34<SP>1</SP>, 35, as sensed by the probe 10, and compared with the flux density sensed by probe 12 in a similar arrangement with a standardized gap. The exciting windings for the two magnetic circuits are connected in series.
