Expanded phenol -formaldehyde polymers are made by mixing a liquid A-stage phenol-formaldehyde resin with a condensation product of formaldehyde, an aromatic monosulphonic acid and an amine, cyanamide, amide or nitrile. The mixture may also contain a volatile organic liquid, e.g. a chlorofluorocarbon, as expanding agent and a surfactant, e.g. an adduct of ethylene oxide and an alkylphenol. In the examples, the above condensation product was derived from (a) formaldehyde, (b) p-phenolsulphonic acid, p-toluenesulphonic acid or benzenesulphonic acid, and (c) m-phenylenediamine, butylamine, cyclohexylamine, benzidine, oxamide, N,N-dimethylformamide, acrylonitrile, dicyandiamide or aniline. |
