1307714 Chucks HEALD MACHINE CO 21 April 1970 [23 April 1969] 19086/70 Heading B3B A chuck for holding thin-walled workpieces without distorting them comprises a housing 30; a first tubular sleeve 32 of elastomer material held in the housing and being capable of receiving a workpiece in its inner bore, the housing being provided with a bore 36 to closely embrace the outer surface of the sleeve and with an inwardly directed flange 38 to engage one end of the sleeve; a first pusher 35 in the housing operated by a fluid pressure actuator to bring force to bear on the sleeve 32 to cause it to expand radially to clamp the workpiece 34, the pusher 35 being slidable in the housing and engaging the other end of the sleeve; a second tubular sleeve 42 of elastomer material received in the housing to clamp the workpiece 34 at a portion spaced from the first sleeve 32, the housing being provided with a second flange 37 to engage one end of the second sleeve; and a second pusher 44 to engage the other end of the second sleeve 42. Different clamping forces can be applied to the workpieces at the sleeves 32 and 42. The sleeves 32, 42 may be reinforced with wear-resistant carbide balls on their internal surfaces, or springs may be embedded in the elastomer material. |
