1290766 Photopolymerization KEUFFEL & ESSER CO 8 May 1970 [8 May 1969] 22478/70 Heading C3P [Also in Divisions C2 and G2] Photopolymerizable compositions which may be coated on a support to form a light sensitive material comprise (a) one or more ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable compounds, (b) a photo-reducible dye and (c) a diazo sulphone defined as having the general formula in which R is a group attached to N by an unsubstituted or substituted aromatic nucleus and R1 is an aromatic or aliphatic group. A long list of suitable diazosulphones is given. Suitable photo-reducible dyes are rose bengal, erythrosine, eosin, fluorescein, acriflavin, methylene blue, thionin, brilliant green, methylene green, riboflavin and methyl violet. The composition may also contain a metal salt such as NaCl, an amine or an aldehyde-bisulphite adduct, all of which accelerate the polymerization. The composition may be polymerized on a support in an imagewise manner with actinic light in which case a film-forming binder is preferably included. Examples describe the photo-polymerization by means of specified reducible dyes and prepared diazosulphones (Examples (1) to (7)) of (8) zinc acrylate in solution in water/methyl Cellosolve (Trade Mark) acetate; (9) as in (8) but with calcium acrylate; (10) and (11) acrylamide and N,N1- methylene bisacrylamide in the solvent of example 8; (12), (13) and (14), as in (10) but with the addition of various metal salts, amines, or sodium sulphite/aldehyde adducts as accelerators; (15) acrylamide and calcium acrylate as in (10); (16) N-methylolacrylamide and calcium acrylate as in (10); and (17) diacetone acrylamide and calcium acrylate as in (10). Examples (19) to (25) and (28) to (46) describe the photo - polymerization of acrylamide / N,N1- methylene - bisacrylamide, acrylamide / N- methylolacrylamide, N-methylol acrylamide/ calcium acrylate, and calcium acrylate, imagewise on supports such as polyethylene terephthalate film using various photoreducible dyes and prepared diazo sulphones from examples (1) to (7), and the usual binders such as gelatine.
