An apparatus for winding adhesive tape around a body 15, Fig. 1, comprises a tape supply 1, a driven roller 4 for withdrawing tape from the source 1, displaceable means 6 and 11 to 14 for forming a loop length of the withdrawn tape prior to each winding operation, a pivotable support 22 for pressing the tape 1a against the body 15, means 17 preventing return feed of the tape, and a frame 20 mounted for raising and lowering movements co-operating with the support 22 to enable the tape to be brought into contact with the body to be wound. Operation.-At the start of an operation the slide member 11 and pulley 6 are at the lefthand end of the slot 12 so that the tape loop about pulleys 5, 6, 7 is at its maximum. The support 22 at the start is at a setting tilted away from the body 15, Fig. 2 (not shown), To start the operation the handle 18 is raised to the phantom line position to raise the frame 20 and cause it to close a switch 57. This causes a control mechanism 42 to actuate a valve relay 56 and cause pressurized air to displace a piston 28 to the left to rock the support 22 about its pivot 8a so that a lower shoe 9 of the support presses the leading end of the tape 1a against the body 15 as illustrated in Fig. 3 (not shown). The handle 18 is then rocked downwardly to its full line position so that the frame member 20 and the support 22 are lowered to a setting in which the upper shoe 10 bears against the coil body. The body 15 is then rotated and it winds tape 1a on to it, the slide member 11 during this time moving continuously towards the right of Fig. 1 until a cam (51) on the member 11 contacts terminal switch 23. When this happens a cutter knife 16 is actuated and it cuts tape 1a. Thereafter a button 25 on the handle 18 is actuated to cause control mechanism 42 to act upon the valve relay 56 to allow the pressurized air to escape from the cylinder 21 and so allow the support 22 to rock away from the coil body. Actuation of the button 25 also causes the control mechanism to actuate relay 41 so that the drive motor 40 is started and the roller 4 pulls more tape off the supply roller 1 until a new tape loop 1b is formed, the length of the tape loop being determined by a cam surface (52) on the slide 11 contacting a switch (24) to cause the relay 41 to do-energize and to stop the motor 40. The apparatus is then ready to apply a tape to a new coil body in the manner described. The spacing between the cams (51), (52) is adjustable to vary the length of the loop 1b. Instead of the roller 6 being located on a slide member 11 it can be mounted on a lever movable through an arc. The tensioning, in either case, can be by a spring 13 or by a weight.
