A method of making a refractory composition for subsequent firing comprises mixing dead-burned basic refractory particles, e.g. dolomite and/or magnesia, with a carbonaceous material capable of undergoing pyrolytic decomposition during firing to form a carbon bond, e.g. coal tar, coal tar pitch, or bituminous asphalt, and incorporating in the mixture non-crystalline powdered carbon. This carbon may be a carbon black or powdered coal or coke, and a blend of a high oil absorbing black with a thermal black is mentioned. In an example, the dead burned particles are mixed with 0.5 to 10% (based on the weight of the total mix) of carbon black, the mixture heated to 225 DEG to 325 DEG F. and then 4 to 10% (based on the total weight) of coal tar pitch added. Specific examples are described. |
