Production of a H2-N2 mixture from a gas mixture obtained by splitting hydrocarbons, comprising reacting CO with steam to form H2 and CO2; cooling the gas mixt. by heat exchange with the decomposition products; absorbing CO2 in an organic solvent at a low temp.; and subsequently washing with liquid N2, is improved in that the decomposition products of the liquid N2 wash are divided for heat exchange with the N2 necessary for the liquid-N2 wash and, on the other hand, with the CO2-absorption medium in such a manner that the N2 is cooled to the temp. of the impure H2 leaving the CO2-absorption station. - By this arrangement, the expense of energy and equipment is reduced.
