<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus for properly determining whether a transfer member is close to or far from a photoreceptor drum, regardless of the operating environment of the image forming apparatus, especially low-temperature low-humidity environment and the state of a transfer conveying belt. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus comprises the photoreceptor drum as an image carrier, the transfer conveying belt as a transfer material conveying member, and the transfer member transferring a toner image on the photoreceptive drum to a transfer material on the transfer conveying belt. It is determined whether the transfer member is in contact with or away from the transfer conveying belt and the photoreceptor drum from a current value flowing when a bias is applied to the transfer member. Two reference value levels are provided for discriminating whether the transfer member is in the contact state or in the separate state and an area where the discrimination is difficult is provided.
