Apparatus for crimping electrical connectors in side-by-side strip form to wires comprises a crimping anvil 19, 21 or 20, 22, a crimping die 28 having a crimping recess 29 defined by leg portions 30, 31, 32, feeding mechanism 11 for a strip of connectors, mechanism for crimping a connector to a wire by bringing together the die and anvil and a shearing device for severing the connector from the strip, the apparatus further comprising a mechanism for holding the connector during crimping and a mechanism for withdrawing the strip of connectors after operation of the shearing device. The connectors (42) are arranged in side-by-side relation in the strip, Fig. 5 (not shown), and are fed by a spring- loaded finger 13 which is actuated from a pneumatic cylinder 14. The connectors are positioned with their wire engaging ferrules (43), (44) on anvils 20, 22 and an operator places the stripped and pre-separated ends of insulated twin-wire in the ferrules. The operator then depresses a pedal to actuate a ram assembly 27. As it descends a plate 35 engages the leading and penultimate connectors and blades 33, 34 shear out interconnecting slugs (45) between the connectors and the next preceding connector. The blades 33, 34 enter into recesses 25, 26, the plate 35 holds the connectors on the anvils and the ferrules are crimped over the wires in the die recesses 29. The plate 35, which is spring- loaded, Fig. 4 (not shown), remains stationary during the latter part of the descent of the assembly 27 and a cam surface 40 engages a co-operating surface 41 to drive the strip feed mechanism 11 rearwardly against springs 3 to allow sufficient room for the leg 32 between the penultimate connector and the next preceding connector. The assembly then returns automatically, the springs 3 return the feed mechanism 11 and the feed finger 13 advances two further connectors over the anvils 19-22. |
