The needles are carried on associated slidable carrier shafts which can be coupled to the machine control mechanism via a common interchangeable control shaft. - Pref. coupling is effected by a spring biassed pivotal clutches on each carrier which locate in requisite detents in the control shaft. - A mechanism for manually uncoupling individual carrier shafts is pref. provided. The needles carrying different coloured yarns can be selectively re-activated thereby eliminating complicated yarn change mechanisms.
