o-Benzoyl benzoic acid is made by oxidizing indane cpds. (I), (II) or (III) with NO2 in the pres. of SeO2, where R1-3 may be alkyl grps. and R1 and/or R3 mayabe H. Preferred starting material is 1-methyl-3-phenyl indane. Pref. the (I), (II) or (III) is heated in an org. solvent such as trichlorobenzene, with 0.1-15 wt.% SeO2, while 10-40 mol. NO2 per mol indane is passed in and water is removed in a separator. Product is esp. useful for the prodn. of anthraquinone (by cyclization), to by reaction with glycerol under reducing conditions to give benzanthrone, useful in the prodn. of dyestuffs.
