A process for selectively combating weeds in cereal, maize, rice, leguminous and/or sugar cane cultures comprises applying a compound of formula: wherein X is F or C 1-4 alkyl; Y is H, F, Cl, Br, I, C 1-4 alkyl, C 1-4 alkoxy, C 1-4 alkylthio, C 1-4 alkylsulphinyl, C 1-4 alkylsulphonyl, nitro or C 1-4 haloalkyl; and R is H, C 1-4 alkyl which is unsubstituted or substituted by two alkoxy groups, C 1-4 alkoxy, allyl or n-butenyl; with the proviso that, when X is Me and Y is H, Cl, Br or Me, then R is not methoxy. Typical compounds used are those wherein X, Y, R are Me, Cl, Me; Me, Cl, Pr; Me, Me, Me; and Me, Cl, Bu. Optional active ingredients which may be present are CMPP, ioxynil, bromoxynil, 3, 5-diBr-4-hydroxybenzaldoxime-0-2, 4-dinitrophenyl ether, neburon, fluometuron, other urea derivatives and triazines.
