A roller having a plastic portion is subjected to controlled heat or solvent treatment to apply a shrinkage stress to relax part of the plastic portion. To produce a roller with a hard outer layer 3 and elastic core 4, the outer portion may be rotated and subjected to infra-red radiation, or treated in a furnace or heated liquid. For the reverse layer arrangement the plastic material may be mounted on a hollow steel shaft, the core of which is filled with a heated liquid or carries an electric heating element, Fig. 2 (not shown). |
