A polyester resin (including unsaturated polyesters mixed with copolymerizable monomers) has incorporated therein a principal modifier of the Formula (I) wherein each X is a halogen atom, each Y is -O- or -NZ- and each Z is H or an organic group, p, q, m, n are integers such that p+q= 2 to 4 and p+m=q+n=5, and an auxiliary modifier which is Sb 2 O 3 and/or an ester of a phosphorus-containing acid. The incorporation may be by mixing at any stage before curing or, where the modifier carries a reactive group, by copolymerization with the polyester starting materials. Suitable phosphorus-containing esters include trialkyl, triaryl, trihydroxyalkyl, trihaloalkyl and alkyl/aryl phosphates, and phosphites and thiophosphites, and the hydroxyalkyl esters of the hydroxyalkyldiphosphonic acids of Specification 1,115,043. The polyester preferably contains 10-35 wt. per cent halogen and 0À1-1À5 wt. per cent phosphorus or (especially for opaque panels) 25-32 wt. per cent halogen and 2-20 wt. per cent antimony. In Examples 1-3 fumaric acid, phthalic anhydride and ethylene glycol are condensed with a 10 : 1 molar adduct of propylene oxide and hydroxyethylidene diphosphonic acid in the presence of a 3 : 1 adduct of propylene oxide and 4 : 4<SP>1</SP>-dihydroxy-octachloro-diphenyl, or the diphosphonic acid may be replaced by triethyl phosphate added after the condensation or with the styrene with which the polyester is then mixed. In Example 5, fumaric acid and ethylene glycol are condensed in the presence of the same chlorinated diphenol, and the product mixed with antimony oxide and styrene.
