A nonwoven wick unit having selectively controlled liquid transfer and reservoir capacity is obtained by limiting the distance between the individual filaments of a filamentary tow, for example, by needle punching the tow. The liquid transfer properties of the unit can be further enhanced by surface treatment such as cutting the surface fibers and brushing up the cut ends.
