1,226,983. Electric motors operating by thermally produced changes of permeability. P. GUILDEN. 21 June, 1968 [11 July, 1967], No. 29781/68. Heading H2A. A pyromagnetic motor comprises a rotor assembly 2 having concentric about its axis a rotor 5 constituted at least partly by ferromagnetic material a portion of which is enclosed by the field of a stator magnet 4, and radiant energy shielding means positioned to receive and so control the energy from a radiant energy source as to concentrate it on a section of the rotor portion thereby to decrease in the section the permeability of the material relative to that in the remainder of the portion and consequently causing rotation of the rotor. The source may be solar or, as shown, an incandescent lamp 1 e.g. a christmas tree bulb, and the motor may drive an ornamental appendage 16 or a toy or an advertizing device. The means comprises a matt infra-red shield 3 having its ring shape interrupted by a window 12 to expose the rotor section, and in a modification Fig. 7 has a mirror (35) opposite the window. The rotor is fixed to a spindle 8 by a cage 6 and in modifications may be slit and/or corrugated to increase the thermal differential. |
